Bringing Literacy to Rural Nepal |
News and Events
Life in Nepal continues to be challenging because of the ongoing insurgency. (See the writing samples for one villager's experience.) But while many nonprofit organizations have pulled out of rural Nepal, the small, locally-based nature of Books in Every Home has enabled us to continue to work and grow. Hom Raj conducted intensive training in 2004 for lead volunteers from Readers’ Circles. Fifty teachers from across Kapilvastu have been trained in methods to engage children in reading and help them succeed in school. Books in Every Home is also implementing early childhood education programs as a pilot program in collaboration with the District Education Officer. It's a reminder that even in the harshest of times and places, children are growing up, youth need a focus for positive energy, and people of all ages crave life-affirming activities.
MEDIA
Books in Every Home has been written about in many publications, including The Nepali Times: http://www.nepalnews.com.np/ntimes/issue131/nepali_society.htm
Radio Nepal devoted a full 20-minute program to Books in Every Home. And here's a sample (in translation) of some of the encouraging things that have been said by the Nepali press:
- "Books in Every Home's project should be the project of every Nepali." (Radio Nepal)
- "It is a reality that people don't go to the books, so Books in Every Home brings the books to the people." (Janadharna)
- "Until books reach every home in Nepal, the possibility of improvement in family and life standard is slim … That is the goal of Books in Every Home." (Gorkhapatra)
- "For the nation's effort of development to be fruitful, literacy programs are not sufficient. That is the genesis of Books in Every Home… This campaign would not only help bring out the talents of the rural areas, but help farmers to increase their production, and help the education system to be more productive and analytical." (Nepal Samacharpatra)
- "Books in Every Home can help Nepali people who have been dominated by poverty to lead successful lives." (Space Time)
- "When I wrote the first article on Books in Every Home, I got so many enthusiastic phone calls that I find I have to write another article… There are talents in the villages that have never been given a chance to come out until now … A reading culture is crucial for Nepal." (Ghatana ra Bichar)
